When kids and adults alike flocked to Nintendo eShop eager to spend the gift cards they found in their stockings, that excitement was quickly spoiled by an eShop error screen. The annual holiday wave has once again brought down the Nintendo Switch eShop for some, according to a report from Kotaku.

Nintendo sent out a tweet, noting that the company is “working to address the issue as soon as possible”. It also includes a link to Nintendo’s online service status page, where you can check for updates on the outage.

As stated on the status page, issues started occurring around 4AM ET. The company provides no additional information about the outage, stating vaguely: “We are currently experiencing problems with our network services. Try again later. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

In a timeline of the outages shown on DownDetector, it appears that the problems peaked around 9 a.m. ET on Christmas morning, but have since abated. I was able to successfully open the Nintendo Switch eShop and download some updates around 4:30 PM ET, so that could be a sign that things are starting to get back online.

However, if you are still experiencing issues with the eShop, please note that the outage will not affect other online activity. You can still play games online, but you just can’t buy or download content from the eShop – which might be a shame if you’re looking to fill your new Switch with digital games.

Nintendo eShop went offline over Christmas last year, and the company didn’t fully restore the service until the next day. Nintendo even warned players that the eShop could become overloaded this holiday weekend and advised them to create a Nintendo account. before the holidays, which isn’t exactly ideal if you want to gift the Switch to someone on Christmas Day.

The edge contacted Nintendo with a request for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
