Thinking ahead about crypto, makers and the climate

Hello and welcome back to Equity, a startup business podcast where we unpack the numbers and nuance behind the headlines.

As is tradition in the show, we used the last episode of the year to make predictions about the following year. To continue an annual tradition, elegance and Chris joined Natasha and Mary Ann and Alex on the microphone, a rare treat and just for your enjoyment. They expected to have a lot to say.

So what have we manifested for 2022? Here’s a sample:

  • We are optimistic about climate-focused startups: A standout theme for some of us was the importance of climate startups and how many types of startups will have a climate flavor. Basically, if the planet changes, it will affect just about everything. And if sustainability isn’t your whole pitch, at least it becomes a strategy soon enough.
  • We had a lot say about crypto: Sure, we’re all a little tired of talking about crypto, but there’s also no chance we could get off the subject when we consider next year. The classic tension between reinvention and regulation remains a dynamic we all care about, and we predict it will be at full throttle over the next 12 months.
  • We are not nearly as optimistic about the media: The Buzzfeed SPAC had disappointed some of us, but when it came to creators and not just writers, we were a little more positive. Everything is media, even if everything doesn’t make money.
  • Space is controversial: We won’t spoil it, but the space chat got a little spicy. The argument ended with an interesting problem in the tech space, which is where does all the money go where it will have the greatest impact?

A big hug from the Equity team to you persistent listeners this year. Thanks for staying with us, and we’ll be back in an instant with another year’s shows – some of which may even be personal!
